What is laser hair removal?
Laser hair removal is a treatment for unwanted body hair. Removing your body hair is a personal, aesthetic choice, and laser hair removal allows you to do so with much less maintenance than other methods like shaving or waxing.
At Meridian Aesthetics and Wellness, we provide laser hair removal services using the Icon™ laser from Cynosure®. The laser clears away body hair without causing skin damage and with minimal discomfort. It targets the pigment in your body hair and heats the follicles until they’re unable to grow hair.
Who can get laser hair removal?
Laser hair removal works best on brown to black hair in both men and women. Some redheads can also have great results with laser hair removal. White, grey, and light blond hair are not ideal candidates for laser hair removal as the laser system targets the pigment in hair for removal and lighter hair colors do not contain enough pigment to be targeted. Dyeing hair does not help the laser target the hair, since dye does not reach the base of the hair under the skin. You will have to shave before laser hair treatments, but do not wax or pluck before sessions, since the base of the hair needs to be present in order for the laser to effectively target the hair.
Which parts of my body can I target with laser hair removal?
You can target the areas of hair on your body that you may normally shave or wax. During your consultation, you can talk to your provider at Meridian Aesthetics and Wellness about targeting multiple areas or just one hard-to-reach place. Possible treatment areas are:
- Arms
- Underarms
- Chest
- Legs
- Back
- Upper lip
- Chin and jaw
- Bikini line
The only place we don’t advise you to target with a laser is the area around your eyes. Eyebrow hair is better left to wax, threading, or home tweezing.
What does laser hair removal feel like?
Most clients describe laser hair removal as feeling like a rubber band snapping against the skin. As the hair becomes thinner or stops growing, each subsequent session will feel more comfortable. Ways to make your session more comfortable include:
- Drinking plenty of water the day before and day of your session
- Shaving before laser sessions (If your skin is sensitive to shaving, we recommend shaving a day or two before, not the day of, your appointment so that the skin is not irritated the day of your hair removal)
- Limit or skip caffeine the day of your treatment
- Schedule your removal when you are not on your period when your body may be more sensitive to pain
- Over the counter anti-inflammatory medications and ice can also decrease irritation
How many laser hair removal treatments do I need?
It takes several sessions to see the complete removal of targeted hair. This is because each of your hair follicles is in a different stage of growth, and each treatment only targets active follicles. Six to nine sessions are the average number of treatments, but some clients may need more or less. We at Meridian Aesthetics and Wellness will evaluate your hair growth and help recommend the optimal number of treatments to remove your unwanted hair.
Are the results of laser hair removal permanent?
The results of laser hair removal vary for everyone, most clients do not need to shave or wax the treated area for years, if ever again! If a few hairs start to appear again, it is usually thinner and finer than before. Clients can purchase maintenance sessions as needed. With each treatment, you will see your body hair diminish and become thinner in the areas you target.
